Managed to watch the other half of The Five Doctors and of course, finally got to see the scene I'd reworked at the start of Aelindor.

It was odd. I mean, I knew how it panned out as I'd read it several times, but having altered it, I did find watching "reality" unfold. Knowing that his fate didn't really change.

I think this is going to be a recurring issue for me. Part of it is tied into the fact Anthony has passed, and that's a wound which still hasn't healed. The rest is frustration that the Master was a character the writers didn't invest in.

Still... onwards. Not sure which is next - depends on what I buy, LOL.

My laptop threw a fit and decided it didn't like playing DVDs roughly halfway through, so here's my take on the first part.

I do like the red herrings - we're supposed to believe the gloved hands belong to the Master, and then the Council is waiting on "him" which we assume is the Doctor, but turns out to be the Master.

Having not seen him for a while, it took me approximately 0.5 seconds to remember why I adore him so much. It's such an entrance. And he's so charmingly scathing, with amusement at being summoned vying with annoyance. I choked at him sitting down and then asking "May I sit?" with those wide puppy eyes.

I think, though, the way to reassure the Doctor isn't to jump out from behind a rock. Doesn't really instill confidence, dear heart. On the other hand what more proof did Three want? Blood? I like that Sarah Jane was of the opinion they shouldn't leave him behind.

Then there's Five. Nothing about the situation fits the Master's MO, but does that matter? No it does not. The Council must have know it was a fool's errand. Yes he's the cunning needed to survive the Death Zone and, perhaps, persuade the Doctor of his good intentions (*tries very hard not to snort*) but he is also dispensable, as he said. They'd not exactly mourn him.

The appearance of Cybermen might not convince Five, but it does put them more or less on the same side. But you don't look back, dear heart, not ever.

I confess to yelling "Don't you fucking dare!" as Five got back up and started away. He did stop, but my relief was rather short-lived. You know, the Doctor would tear a strip of the Master for that little theft, but it's okay for him now, isn't it?

Given I've still got to watch Planet of Fire, I'm going off Five rather a lot. Bastard.

This was the point my laptop died - Five with the Council and the Master charming Cybermen. Which left me with one question: where the hell did he get the cloak from?

Jeff Goddard creates some gorgeous fanart and I found this in his archives. Strictly speaking it's incorrect as Ainley's Master dies [in prose] to be reincarnated by Rassilon during the Time War in a new body, but whatever. Maybe the War Doctor is warning him or something. ;)
